Although I haven't posted much lately, I've been working a lot on Lead Balloon (the most recent incarnation is at the top). There's still a LOT to do - I haven't even tackled the right side of the "head" yet - but I begin to feel a few things settling into place, like little anchors. Which is reassuring, because for several months with this painting I was afraid nothing was going to stick. I find working on these "Headcase" paintings interesting, because the process is this continuous cycle of expansion and contraction, of complication and simplification, of putting things in and taking them out and putting them back somewhere else, only bigger and a different color. It's like standing in the middle of a see-saw, perpetually and incrementally shifting my weight from one side of the plank to the other, trying to maintain equipoise between opposing, equally necessary forces.
